Next Saturday I plan on spending the day going to some art galleries in Los Angeles. One of the exhibits is Estevan Orial. Check his link, he captures some great shots. I was checking out the last laugh la blog when I came across this video. Its pretty funny.

week two day six
january twenty third two thousand and nine
Two weeks down twelve more to go. The term is in full swing now. Did my first design comps this week on Tuesday for Design 2. We also did the laser lab workshop. I am now laser certified. It was pretty easy, I made a cheesy star with my name on it.

In my materials class I had my first mini project. We had to create something from a disposable object. This object could not be designed, it had to be created on the fly. I used zipties and made a tower of sorts.
We have to take video of our object showing its movement. Kinda weird but whatever. The teacher is a fine artist, she does installations, sculptures and things in that realm. We are now working on this block of plaster. We had to make a form to cast the plaster in and now we are starting to shape it. After materials class Jesse and I had Draw and Aim. Its a drawing class geared toward Graphic Design majors. I hate drawing, with that in mind at least we were drawing a naked chick. It was also my bday so that was a nice present. I am 30 years old now if you didn't know. After class before going out to dinner, I had to get my car jump started. Jesse had about 2 hours of sleep the night before. He was working on a freelance website. During his midday break he decided to rest in the car and listen to the radio. The battery needed to be replaced but he drained what little juice was left in it. Luckily the facilities office has a battery pack jump starter so it wasn't long before we were off to Barn Burner Texas BBQ. Brody and Kiko joined Jesse, Lynsey and myself for dinner. It was dollar Thursday so we order about 30 things off the dollar menu. During dinner this girl came up to us and took our picture. We would later get a complementary collage that included our picture. It was pretty random and odd at the same time.

Today's writing studio was pretty boring. We were discussing things like the difference between Their and There. Really, I mean come on. This is ridiculous. I mean did they even bother to look at my transcripts. I suck at writing but not this bad. I am so over it. It should be an easy A though. After class I went home to relax before going back to school. Then at 4 I had to be back at school for a focus group. The group was made up of 9 other students, one student from each of the majors were present. We were selected to view and discuss three of the potential designs and navigational layouts for a new art center website. That was interesting to say the least. After that I went to finally get a new car battery. I had gotten an oil change about 2 weeks ago and was told I needed a new battery so I finally had to get one. After installing it Jesse, Lynsey and I ordered Chinese food. Its now 11:40 and I am getting ready for bed. Week three starts tomorrow.
With a view like that how could I not take a picture.

week two day one

The first week went as smooth as I could have imagined. The classes I am taking for the most part are amazing. I can't wait to see what I will be doing in a couple semesters let alone when I graduate. The Saturday part of writing class isn't going to be as bad as I thought it would be. Its pretty easy, its just a writing day and you get to leave when you are done.
In the evening Gabe came down from his road trip to Santa Barbara and stayed over. We went to a Saints and Sinners party in Hermosa Beach. It was pretty fun and got some good pics. The drive was about 45 mins and we didn't get back to my place until 5:30. I was dead on Sunday, but I took Gabe to see the Art Center campus. Here are some pics of the campus and surrounding neighborhood. Of course there are more pics on my flickr.

week one day one
january tenth, two thousand and nine
Orientation week has finally finished. I received almost everything I should have. I have my I.D. Card, parking permit, classes all 6 of them. I will let you know about those later. The one thing I didn't get was my library card. That will have to wait until I need to check something out.
As of this moment my class schedule consists of:
Monday 8-12:30 Communication Design, 1-2 Critical Practice
Tuesday 2-7 Design 2: Color and structure

Communication Design 1:
This class covers historical aspects of the advertising and graphic design fields, as well as addressing communication strategies including the effective use of metaphors, iconography, idioms, allegories, clich233s and methodologies. The nature of symbol and cultural essence are considered in assignments where the dynamic role of image, photography or illustration is stressed. Problem solving and conceptual thinking are strongly emphasized, as are the development of philosophical and professional attitudes related to the role of the designer as interpreter of society and promoter of products and services. This course provides an intensive introduction to both the creation and critique of original ideas.
Critical Practice 1:
Critical Practice I will provide a basic visual vocabulary or rhetoric. The primary learning objective is to understand how images work, successfully or not, to convey the intended meaning of the artist/designer to a desired audience. Rather than ask what images mean, the emphasis is on how they work in a variety of contexts. In other words, students will learn the rhetoric of visual communication1/rhetoric understood here as a form of persuasion that produces an intellectual and physical transformation in the viewer. This is a different approach from the usual critical theory class in which the goal is to understand different theoretical frames, models of interpretation or a prior condition of meaning. Instead, following Wittgenstein, the question of meaning begins only after a desired effect (or affect) is produced a model based on intentionalism.
Design 2: Structure and Color:
This course expands on the initial exercises introduced in Design 1 concerning non-objective 2D and illusionary 3D space by building more complex color and spatial compositions.
Materials of Art & Design:
This foundation level class is dedicated to enhancing the student's understanding of the inherent characteristics of a variety of materials in order to explore their best applications for art or design projects. For this reason, assignments are experimental in an effort to discover innovative solutions to the development of form, structure and texture. Materials may include wood, plastics, plaster, metal and paper. Students broaden their understanding of creative problem-solving, originality, and analysis of visual information. Material covered includes the safe operation of woodworking and some metal-working machines, as well as techniques of mold-making, and material safety.
Draw & Aim:
Students study for 4 weeks each with 3 successive faculty members to learn the fundamentals of perspective, object drawing, form description, location sketching and digital photography.
Writing Studio: Intensive:
There isn't a course description but basically I failed the writing exam because the only writing course lower than this is ESL. However its pretty easy and I am hoping that I will get an A in the class.
As you can see my schedule is pretty packed. A couple of the classes I am told don't have much outside work but my days are pretty full.
My first class was today, Writing Studio: Intensive. Basically I failed the writing test and was placed into this class. The only class lower is an ESL writing class. Oh well hopefully it will make me a better writer even if I don't think I should be in this class.
Going home today to get the rest of the things I wasn't able to bring up last weekend. It will be nice to watch the Charger game in San Diego. It will probably be the only time I get to go home for a while.
On the home front the wifi we were "borrowing" was locked down so we won't have net access until the DSL finally gets hooked up on Wednesday. This happens to be the same day our gas gets turned on. It will be nice to eat something other than fast food or something that was cooked in a microwave. Until next time...
